Internships are one-time, degree related work experiences. Academic internships are offered through the departments. These internships may or may not be paid, and the length of each assignment is determined by the department. Not-for-credit internships are those not required by the academic departments, generally last one full semester and may or may not be paid.
Students may have multiple internships during their college careers. Benefits to participating in an internship program include gaining clarity of career choice, increasing understanding of classroom theory, enhancing marketability to employers following graduation and networking with professionals.
To qualify for internships, students must be enrolled at the university and must be authorized to work in the United States. Students accepting a not-for-credit internship must register for the internship section, pay the associated fees, and complete forms at the beginning of term, mid-term and end of term.
